Working for a company is like belonging to a team. Each employee understands what is expected of them, what they need to do to make the company function properly and the rules to follow to do their job well. In essence, to win!
How can a company improve the performances of their “team”? By team building. Companies have long since been using team building to bring out the best in their employees in terms of positive communication, leadership qualities, control issues, and the ability to work closely together as a team and trust one another to solve problems.
A truly fun exercise for team building is organizing a golf day. With people on a team that have different skill levels each person will bring something different to the table, just like at work.
Playing a Scramble format means that each person takes a hit on each shot and then it is determined which shot is the best. This goes on until the ball drops into the hole. Each team counts the number of strokes it took to get the ball in the hole and the team with the lower score wins. All members contribute where they are the strongest with some being able to hit the best drives and others being better at putting or chipping. This is the same type balance you are trying to achieve in the work place.
Presenting golf awards both serious (1st, 2nd, 3rd place team) and humorous (shortest drive) will add to the fun of the day and provide even more positive reinforcement within a team. Building inter-personal relationships between employees with a day on the greens will allow employees to take what they learned from each other’s strengths and weaknesses and be able to apply them to the day to day operations in the office.
